Stephen McCafferty’s love for music began early, sparked by his grandmother’s old stereo and his mum’s eclectic vinyl and cassette collection. Inspired by timeless artists like David Bowie, The Cranberries, Eurythmics, and The Beatles, Stephen developed an enduring passion for music that would shape his unique style. Known for his introspective lyrics and anthemic choruses, his songs pull from the classic song-writing traditions of the 20th century, exploring deep existential themes influenced by literature and pop culture.
Stephen’s journey hasn’t been a smooth one. His late teens and early twenties were marked by a nomadic existence across Scotland, often without a permanent home—sofa-surfing, sleeping in cars, wheelbarrows, and even a digger. A defining moment came when he moved to Edinburgh and declared himself homeless, leading to a transformative year in a shelter. It was here he began to write the songs that would later bring national attention, with his band Return To The Sun achieving three XFM Breakout tracks of the week.
With extensive experience on the live circuit, Stephen performed with bands like Beautiful By Design and Return To The Sun, earning slots at major festivals like The Isle of Wight and airplay on BBC Introducing. Following a break to reflect and recalibrate, Stephen has returned with a renewed sense of purpose. Drawing from his rich musical influences, he’s crafting songs that resonate deeply with both him and his growing audience.
In 2024, Stephen has already released four singles, with his fifth, “Someday Somehow,” slated for release on October 18. His previous single, “Quiet Dream,” gained traction across radio stations worldwide, expanding his reach and setting the stage for what’s next. After a year of intensive studio sessions, Stephen McCafferty is poised for an exciting future, ready to share even more of his musical vision with the world.
