“ New release Ultraviolet from Boy Found Sound has a great groove and melody, check it out.”
NMR – A slightly nostalgic feel to this new track from Boy Found Sound, an 80’s style drum track combines with some nice synth sounds and guitar licks, all wrapped up in a great mix and vocal delivery.
A Journey in Music: A Story of Passion, Perseverance, and Unexpected Twists
I’m Matt, a 42-year-old songwriter from Redcar, Cleveland.
At 15, my life took an unexpected turn when my parents moved us down south for better job opportunities. Leaving everything I knew in Teesside for rural Lincolnshire was a massive shock. Integrating into a new school was tough, but my guitar was my steadfast companion. This was during the Britpop revolution, and I learned a lot from watching the likes of Noel Gallagher and Graham Coxon on shows like TOTP and TFI Friday. I was also a massive Nirvana fan, which is why my eldest son is named Cobain, or Coby for short.
In September 2002, I met my future wife, and we quickly moved in together. We had our first child, Coby, in January 2004, followed by Jake in July 2005. It became clear that something was different about Coby, and he was diagnosed with autism, followed by Jake a couple of years later. Despite the challenges, I continued to play guitar whenever I could.
In 2008, a freak accident during a Sunday league football game resulted in the loss of a finger on my fretting hand. I knew immediately that my guitar playing days were over, and my guitar stayed in its case for over a decade as I focused on my two non-verbal boys.
In 2019, while tidying up my kids’ toys, I picked up a cheap acoustic guitar and decided to give it a try. Despite my limitations, I found new ways to play and eventually started writing my own material as boy Found Sound . One of my songs, “Count My Blessings,” is almost autobiographical, reflecting the struggles and sacrifices of being a full-time carer.
I sent a rough demo of the song to a Middlesbrough-based producer, who responded with interest. This marked the beginning of my music career as Boy Found Sound . I recorded and released my debut EP, “A Dream Come True,” last August, followed by the single “Plasticine” in February, a tribute to my late sister Diane.
My latest single, “Ultraviolet,” was released on July 26, 2024. Earlier this year, I started getting interest from promoters who assumed Boy Found Sound was a full band. I was invited to play the Munro Festival in Stockton but didn’t have a band. Fortunately, a friend connected me with a local band, and we started rehearsals in late spring. Although Munro Festival was canceled, we performed our first full live show at NEVolume a week ago, and it went well enough to get another booking in September.
Life works in mysterious ways, and you never know what’s coming next, but I’m going to enjoy the Boy Found Sound ride while it lasts.
