Written by myself with help from Thea Kay, and produced by the brilliant LA-based duo Tripped n Sat, this track has a lot to offer sonically.

It begins with a soft, intimate diary entry from last year, sung over a gentle piano. Gradually, it builds into an upbeat, guitar-led indie-pop song, taking listeners on a journey — from an uncertain future, through a regretful past, and landing in an optimistic, present-moment chorus.

Silk is soft, smooth, and sensual. It evokes an image of femininity and adult elegance — think bedsheets, pyjamas, little black dresses, or even a slick bow tie.

Corduroy, on the other hand, is rougher and more durable. It carries a casual, youthful, and genderless energy — dungarees, kids’ clothes, everyday trousers.

The phrase “Silk or Corduroy” is about embracing joy no matter who you are or how you present yourself. It’s a reminder that you’re never the wrong kind of person to “go out, choose joy, dance in silk or corduroy.”

One of my favourite parts of the song is the bridge, where I layered the voices of many of my friends to create a crowd-like feeling. I dream of the day I’ll hear this part chanted by thousands at a festival:

“Maybe it all lies in the mediocre, the cruxes of life that we find when we’re sober, the hours of brushing teeth and moments spent in queues, the repetitiveness of pre-hang-up ‘I love yous’”

To me, this lyric encapsulates the entire spirit of Silk or Corduroy — finding meaning and magic in life’s quiet, mundane moments.

I’m a Brighton-based artist, originally from Bristol, and recently moved back to the UK after four years living in Amsterdam. I’ve been releasing music independently for over five years now, learning and growing with every new release.

Thanks for listening, and for dancing — whether you’re in silk or corduroy.
